By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The conclusion of the William Dawson Sprite Basketball Tournament 2025 has been put on hold. The third‑place match and the grand final, both originally scheduled for today, Sunday, December 28th, at Birds Isle in Belize City, have been officially postponed. No new date has been announced.

The tournament was set to wrap up its 2025 edition with the final games beginning at 11:00 am. Class and the Lords Bank Warriors were scheduled to open the day in the battle for third place. That matchup would have led directly into the championship showdown at midday, where Tuff Enuff and Don One were preparing to square off for the coveted title.

Closing ceremonies were planned for 1:00 p.m., marking the end of a competitive and community‑driven tournament honoring the legacy of William “Bill” Dawson.

This tournament is organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU), which continues to use sports as a tool for peacebuilding, unity, and community engagement. The competition forms part of the Government’s Multi‑Sectoral Approach to crime prevention, building on the success of the Live Life Basketball Tournament relaunched in 2021. Since then, the initiative has consistently helped reduce tensions, strengthen relationships among youth, and create safer spaces across Belize City and surrounding communities.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise, following the passing of LIU Director William Dawson in 2022, the tournament was renamed in his honour. His legacy of respect, collaboration, and resilience remains central to the event’s mission. The tournament’s rapid growth — from 15 teams in 2021 to 24 in 2024, and 30 teams this year — reflects strong community buy‑in from neighborhoods, villages, and local businesses.

The 2025 edition officially launched on Friday, October 10, at Birds Isle. During the ceremony, family members of the late William Dawson received complimentary jerseys, while team officials were presented with their tournament kits by Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa a
