By Zoila Palma: The 2025 William Dawson Basketball Tournament was officially launched on Friday, October 10, at Birds Isle in Belize City, marking another year of community engagement and youth empowerment through sports.
The tournament, organized by the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) under the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, continues to promote peace, unity, and collaboration among Belizean communities.
First relaunched in 2021 as the Live Life Basketball Tournament under the Government’s Multi-Sectoral Approach to crime prevention, the event has become a model for using sports as a bridge between rival groups and a tool for reducing violence.
Since its inception, participating communities have reported fewer crime incidents and stronger bonds among youth and neighborhoods.
Following the passing of LIU Director William Dawson in 2022, the tournament was renamed in his honor. His legacy of mentorship and community building remains at the heart of the initiative, which has grown from 15 teams in 2021 to 24 in 2024.
This year, 30 teams are expected to compete, reflecting the tournament’s growing popularity and positive impact.
During the opening ceremony, family members of the late William Dawson were presented with honorary jerseys, while team officials received their official tournament gear from Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa and donors including Digi.
