By Aaron Humes: Members of the University of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU) were protesting for a 9 percent pay increase during Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting in Belmopan.
However, Minister of Education Oscar Requena told the Cabinet the matter was between the UB Board of Trustees and the Union. The Minister further informed Cabinet that the Government’s total contribution to the University of Belize is over $13.5 million, of which $7.5 million is given in subventions and more than $6 million in financial assistance to students.
The Union, supported by the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) and fellow unions, argues that the University needs more funding in order to grow and better serve its students as the National University.
