By Zoila Palma: Over 200 students from Buttonwood Bay Nazarene School and Belize Elementary School recently participated in exciting conservation activities as part of Reef Week, learning how they can help protect Belize’s reefs, wildlife, and natural resources.
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)Belize along with MarAlliance captivated students with fascinating insights into sharks and their importance to healthy ocean ecosystems.
The WCS Belize team also engaged students in identifying important finfish species, including some that are protected, helping them better understand Belize’s marine biodiversity and the need for sustainable fishing practices.
Students also enjoyed the Chalupa card game, a version developed by Michelle Irving of Productive Organization for Women in Action, POWA.
Through this interactive game—developed under the #CAPAInitative with support from Canada’s Foreign Policy—Global Affairs Canada and implemented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and WCS—students explored topics such as climate change, nature-based solutions, marine and terrestrial biodiversity, and environmental stewardship.
WCS continues to inspire students to become champions for conservation and help protect Belize’s wildlife and wild places.
