Wife drops case against man with mental health struggles who broke into her house and stole all her documents

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 32-year-old man is free of a burglary charge after his common-law wife told the court she no longer wished to pursue the case against him.

Mark Anthony Smith, formerly of North Front Street, was accused of breaking into the apartment of his common-law partner, a traffic officer, and stealing personal documents and items, including birth certificates, credit union books, social security cards, and a land certificate. The alleged burglary took place on November 2, 2024.

But on Friday in Court #6, the woman informed Magistrate Mannon Dennison that she wanted no further court action. After being asked by the prosecutor whether she was pressured or threatened, she said she was acting on her own free will. She explained that Smith has since been receiving help and taking his medication, and she no longer saw the need to continue with the case.

Smith, who has struggled with mental health issues, confirmed to the court that he is now taking his medication and feels better. He admitted he was unaware the case was still active, which explained his failure to appear in court since January.

Magistrate Dennison struck out the charge for want of prosecution but cautioned Smith that he was fortunate, as he could have been remanded to prison had his wife not withdrawn the complaint.
