Why Belize should be watching Colombia’s election result

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Colombia may be more than a thousand miles away, but the outcome of its presidential election could matter more to Belize than many realise.

In a knife-edge runoff, far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella has, according to preliminary results, narrowly defeated leftist Iván Cepeda to become Colombia’s likely next president, though his rival is challenging the count. De la Espriella ran as a tough-on-crime outsider backed by US President Donald Trump, and his apparent win signals a sharp rightward turn for one of Latin America’s most important countries.

So why does it matter for Belize? For one, Colombia sits at the heart of the regional drug trade as the world’s top cocaine producer. De la Espriella has promised an aggressive crackdown on cartels and trafficking, including US-backed operations and Bukele-style mega-prisons. When Colombia squeezes the drug trade, the effects are often felt along the transit routes that wind through Central America and the Caribbean, Belize among them.

Then there is the bigger regional picture. His victory adds to a growing group of Trump-aligned leaders in the Americas and reflects the spread of the “iron fist” security model pioneered by El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele. It is an approach increasingly debated across a region, Belize included, that continues to wrestle with crime and violence. His close ties to Washington, and US officials’ talk of tighter regional security and migration cooperation, are also worth watching for any Caribbean or Central American nation balancing its own relationship with the United States.

For now, the result remains preliminary and contested. But if it stands, Colombia’s new direction will be one more regional development for Belize to keep a close eye on.
