Who failed Belize’s power system? Senate launches 10 year inquiry

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Senate has agreed to launch a Special Select Committee to investigate the chronic power shortages and supply failures that have plagued Belize.

The motion, brought by Business Senator Kevin Herrera, passed with unanimous support on Thursday night at the end of a marathon sitting that began last week, ran for 15 hours, and resumed for another three hours before wrapping up around 8:35pm.

The committee will look into the root causes, documents, communications, policies and processes linked to generation shortfalls and power failures over the past ten years.

Herrera said the inquiry must be thorough, independent and free of politics.

“We must summon the decision makers, review the documents, and chart a unified path forward to ensure our citizens are never again left, quite literally, Madam President, in the dark,” he said.

He said the committee should examine the power purchase agreements governing the grid and determine whether the Public Utilities Commission, Belize Electricity Limited and the relevant ministries carried out their duties with enough foresight.

Under the motion, the committee will be allowed to hire energy experts, engineers, attorneys, accountants and other specialists. Its members will elect a chairman at their first meeting.
