What has Easter become in Belize

By Horace Palacio: Easter is supposed to be one of the holiest moments in the Christian calendar.

A time of reflection.
A time of sacrifice.
A time to remember the meaning behind the cross.

But in Belize, we must ask ourselves an uncomfortable question.

What has Easter become?

Because if we are honest, what we see today looks very different from what it is supposed to represent.

Parties.
Heavy drinking.
Vulgar dance contests.
Fights.
Reckless behavior.

And then we call it celebration.

Somewhere along the way, the meaning got lost.

Easter weekend has turned into just another long holiday. Another excuse to escape, to indulge, to disconnect completely from the very reason the holiday exists.

This is not about judging people.

It is about asking whether we as a society have drifted too far from the values we claim to hold.

Because Belize still calls itself a Christian nation.

We pray.
We go to church.
We speak about God.

But moments like this reveal something deeper.

There is a growing gap between what we say and how we live.

It is easy to celebrate the benefits of faith. Forgiveness. Grace. Blessings.

But it is harder to live with discipline, reflection, and respect for what those things represent.

That is the real issue.

And it raises bigger questions.

Have we turned sacred moments into entertainment?
Have we replaced meaning with pleasure?
Have we become more focused on escape than reflection?

Because culture does not change overnight.

It shifts slowly.

A little less meaning.
A little more indulgence.
A little more normalization of behavior that once would have been questioned.

Until eventually, what was once sacred becomes just another weekend.

But here is the balance that must be acknowledged.

People will always celebrate. People will always seek enjoyment, relaxation, and freedom. That is part of life.

The issue is not celebration itself.

The issue is when celebration completely replaces meaning.

Because then something important is lost.

Not just religiously, but culturally.

Belize has always been known for its strong sense of community, faith, and values. But those things require maintenance. They require awareness. They require people to consciously decide what kind of society they want to be.

And that decision cannot be left only to churches or leaders.

It belongs to everyone.

So maybe the real question is not who to blame.

Maybe the real question is this.

What do we want Easter to mean in Belize?

Because whatever the answer is, that is exactly what it will become.
