By Horace Palacio: Belizeans are waking up to a wet start to 2025 as moist and unstable conditions dominate the country’s weather on New Year’s Day. The Belize Meteorological Service has forecast cloudy skies accompanied by a few showers, isolated thunderstorms, and periods of rain, primarily along the coast this morning. Rainfall activity is expected to spread across most regions by the afternoon and continue into tonight.

Marine conditions reflect the unsettled weather, with east-northeast winds blowing at 5-15 knots and a choppy sea state. Wave heights are predicted to range between 3 and 5 feet, and mariners are advised to proceed with caution.

Temperatures will remain seasonally mild. Coastal areas will see highs of 83°F (28°C) and lows of 72°F (22°C). Inland regions are forecast to reach a warm 86°F (30°C) during the day, cooling to 68°F (20°C) at night. In the hills, daytime highs will peak at 78°F (26°C), with nighttime temperatures dropping to 63°F (17°C).

Looking ahead to Thursday, the forecast indicates that a few showers and periods of rain will persist around the country. However, conditions are expected to gradually improve by Thursday night as rainfall activity decreases.

The tidal schedule for New Year’s Day includes a low tide at 5:34 AM, followed by a high tide at 11:42 AM. Another low tide is set for 4:32 PM, with the final high tide of the day occurring at 10:48 PM. Sunrise was at 6:23 AM, and sunset is expected at 5:29 PM. The moon rose at 8:00 AM and will set at 7:22 PM.

Forecaster Shanea Young advises residents to stay prepared for widespread rainfall today and tonight, which could impact outdoor New Year’s Day activities. Caution is urged, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
