We’re shocked too bro: 4-months in jail for stealing two $211 bottles of Aniseed from Brodies; Man tells court he has been struggling emotionally since mom died

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 23-year-old Ladyville resident is behind bars tonight after picking up his second conviction for theft – this time for stealing two bottles of aniseed valued at a total of $422 from inside James Brodies & Company Ltd.

Tyrese Morese Banner appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #3 on Monday morning, where he pleaded guilty to stealing two bottles of aniseed valued at $211 each. The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.

According to the facts, store officials at Brodies noticed a tall, slim man acting suspiciously around 8:00 a.m. When surveillance footage was reviewed, Banner was seen removing the two bottles from a shelf. Caribbean Shores police were called, and officers identified the man in the video as Banner, a call center agent from Ladyville. He was later charged with theft.

In mitigation, Banner told the court he had been struggling emotionally since the death of his mother and asked for a fine instead of jail, acknowledging that his actions were wrong. However, the Magistrate noted that this was Banner’s second conviction for crimes of dishonesty, with a previous theft case dating back to 2023 in which he failed to pay a $305 fine.

Starting from a three-month baseline sentence, the court considered Banner’s early guilty plea, acceptance of responsibility, and request for leniency. His prior conviction, however, was a significant aggravating factor, resulting in an increase of three months. After applying a one-third reduction for his guilty plea, Banner was sentenced to four months imprisonment.

The sentence will run concurrently with the penalty from his previous theft conviction.
