By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring Hurricane Kirk, currently located approximately 1,200 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands.
As of the latest reports, Kirk boasts maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher gusts, and forecasters predict that the hurricane will continue to strengthen over the next few days.
Meteorologists anticipate that Kirk could develop into a major hurricane by Thursday, posing a potential threat to any areas in its path.
In addition to Hurricane Kirk, the NHC is monitoring a broad trough of low pressure affecting the northwestern Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
This system has produced a significant area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms, with conditions favorable for gradual development.
This system has a 40 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next week as the system progresses further into the Gulf.
Another area of concern is located in the eastern tropical Atlantic, where a low-pressure system south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is showing increased organization.
This system has a high 90 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 48 hours as it moves slowly westward.
