By Zoila Palma:  Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are monitoring a tropical wave over the central Atlantic, more than 1,000 miles east of the Windward Islands.

The system is producing widespread showers and thunderstorms and is moving westward at 15–20 mph.

While development into a tropical cyclone is currently unlikely in the next 48 hours, there is a 30% chance over the next seven days.

Regardless of formation, the system is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the Windward Islands late this weekend and continue across the Caribbean Sea through much of next week.

In the North Atlantic, a non-tropical low-pressure system remains well off the coast of the Northeast United States.

Forecasters say there is a slight chance (10%) it could gain subtropical characteristics over the weekend before moving northeast over cooler waters by early next week.
