By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasts are predicting this year’s hurricane season to be extremely active with 23 named storms.
Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon explained that preliminary forecasts predict that of those 23 named storms, 11 could become hurricanes and 5 of those could become major hurricanes.
The main factors of an active Hurricane season could be due to warmer water temperatures.
Gordon also explained that a main factor could be a transition from El Niño to La Niña.
La Niña is known to impact the Atlantic hurricane season, typically a more active hurricane season.
However, Gordon said that the National Meteorological Service of Belize is properly equipped with the radar and forecast models as we gear up to monitor this year’s Hurricane season.
In addition, Meteorologists in Belize receive information on precise location and forecast models from the National Hurricane Center in the United States.
