By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Team Belize captain Gareth Bruce put on a stellar performance in Belize’s convincing victory over Honduras on Wednesday night in Day 2 of the XX U-21 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship at the Belize City Civic Center.
The victory propelled Belize to a 2-0 record and the top spot in the regional tournament.
Bruce scored 17 points, 15 from attack and two aces, leading Belize’s relentless attacks against the Honduras side to win in three consecutive sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) in one hour and five minutes. She had also scored 17 points in the victory over Nicaragua on Tuesday.
“We were mentally prepared to do our best work, we had the energy, for us this game was great,” Bruce told the Association of Central American Volleyball Federations (AFECAVOL).
“We are focused on always maintaining the same spirit in every match.”
Nisaan Martinez added 10 points, 9 from attack and one ace. Blessed Omamurhe contributed nine points, five from attacks, one block, and three aces.
“As a team, we did a good job within our possibilities,” Honduras’ captain Mónica Velásquez said.
“I have to congratulate the members of my team, because for many this is the first selection process and many of them are very young, even for this Under-21 category.”
Belize rest on Thursday allowing defending champions Guatemala, who rested on Wednesday, to catch up when they meet Nicaragua in the opener at 5:00 pm. Guatemala started off with a 3-0 win over El Salvador on Tuesday.
The second game on Thursday will feature Honduras and El Salvador at 7:30 pm.
Belize will play El Salvador on Friday and close against Guatemala on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 8:00 pm.
