Water restored in Belize City; health officials advises to flush discolored water before using water

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness issued an advisory notifying that due to the breakage in the city’s water distribution system yesterday, repairs were done on the broken water line by BWS.

Although the pipes were fully repaired, sealed and water services restored, some customers may experience discoloration in their water which is caused by the increase airflow in the pipes stirring buildup sediments within the pipelines.

“The water is considered SAFE as the system contains chlorine that will act on any contaminants present. However, to ensure complete release of the sediments from the water line, it is recommended that households seeing discolored water flush their pipes by running the water for about two minutes,” the Ministry of Health and Wellness said.

The Ministry noted that running the water will allow sediments to be released returning the water to its clear color.

“If the discoloration is still present after the running of pipe, you are advised not to use the water for drinking or cooking food and to notify BWS so they can take any other necessary corrective measures to restore the water quality,” the Ministry urged.
