By Breaking Belize News Staff: A watchman from Patchakan Village, Corozal District, has been arrested and charged with burglary after allegedly stealing US$3,000 from the home of a doctor along the Philip Goldson Highway.
Eloy Cawich was formally charged on Wednesday, October 7, following an investigation into a burglary at the residence of a 71-year-old doctor near Mile 10¼ of the highway.
The doctor reported that his home was burglarized sometime between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4.
He discovered that US$3,000 in various denominations had disappeared from an attaché case kept inside his bedroom.
According to the police report, the doctor identified Cawich, his employee, as the only other person who knew where the money was stored. Nothing else appeared to have been disturbed or stolen.
Investigators determined that entry had been gained by breaking glass louvers on a bathroom window. Crime scene technicians also recovered a fingerprint.
Police subsequently detained Cawich, who allegedly admitted to stealing the money during questioning.
The report further states that investigators conducted a video-recorded interview under caution in the presence of a justice of the peace, during which Cawich allegedly acknowledged entering the residence without permission and taking the money.
He was subsequently charged with burglary.
