By Aaron Humes: Wannie, the horse found last week with signs of torture in Belize City, has officially been declared free of the invasive New World Screwworm. The announcement comes after rigorous testing conducted by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), Dr. Salustino Pech confirmed to Breaking Belize News (BBN).
Wannie was suffering from multiple wounds that raised concerns about potential parasite infections. Immediate action was taken, and BAHA collected samples from the affected areas to test for the presence of the screwworm, a parasite known for its gruesome effects on livestock.
After conducting thorough examinations, BAHA confirmed on Tuesday that Wannie does not harbor the dreaded screwworm, allowing for a significant sigh of relief among his caretakers and supporters. The community has rallied around the horse, demonstrating tremendous compassion and support during his recovery.
Several young men have pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals but face continued prosecution on other charges.
