By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 21-year-old waiter from Hattieville has been convicted for drug possession after police caught him with more than 100 grams of marijuana—over ten times the amount legally permitted for personal use.
The accused, Robert Charles Joseph III, of Mile 15 ½ George Price Highway, pleaded guilty in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply after police found him carrying 107.1 grams of cannabis on Friday, August 15, 2025.
Joseph faced the possibility of a mandatory $10,000 fine and three years in prison, but Magistrate Ludlow Black considered his early guilty plea and handed down a non-custodial sentence. He was fined $500 plus $5 court costs, bringing his total debt to $505, which he must pay by September 30, 2025, or face five months’ imprisonment in default.
The case stemmed from a police operation around 7:10 p.m. on August 15. Acting on information, officers intercepted a black Ford Ranger pickup traveling towards Hattieville. During the search, police found Joseph carrying a teal Everest school bag, inside which they discovered a transparent plastic bag containing suspected cannabis. The drugs were later confirmed to weigh 107.1 grams.
Although Joseph received leniency, Magistrate Black noted the aggravating factor that the amount far exceeded the legal personal-use limit. This conviction now marks Joseph’s first drug-related offense on record.
