By Horace Palacio: A violent attack in the northern region of Petén, Guatemala, on Saturday left eight people dead, including seven adults and one child, according to Guatemalan authorities. The victims were ambushed while traveling in a pickup truck near Santa Marta, El Naranjo, at the intersection of Santa Rosita and San Andrés — an area frequented by both locals and tourists.

This route is often used by Belizeans and international visitors traveling between Belize and popular Guatemalan attractions such as Tikal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The incident has raised safety concerns for tourists and Belizeans who frequently pass through the area.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made, authorities are investigating potential links to organized crime, as the region has seen sporadic violence in recent years. The area is known for its proximity to drug trafficking routes, though it is not yet confirmed if this attack was related to such activity.

As the situation develops, Belizeans and tourists should remain cautious while traveling through northern Guatemala.
