By Aaron Humes: What the Police Department’s incident report describes as a routine police patrol in Paraiso Village turned chaotic when several family members intervened in the arrest of a motorcyclist without a tail light on Tuesday night.
Four responding officers initiated a chase after the suspect, identified as a Hispanic male, refused to stop when ordered. The chase concluded at the suspect’s residence, where officers informed him of his detention and intention to escort him to the Corozal Police Station. According to reports, the situation took a turn as the suspect’s family members became aggressive, obstructing the officers from executing their duties. At approximately 7:30 PM, with tensions escalating, PC Arzu reached out for assistance from the Quick Response Team. Upon their arrival, the situation deteriorated further as family members launched an attack on the police officers using pint bottles, sticks, and a metal bar.
The violence resulted in injuries to multiple officers. All injured officers were taken to Corozal Community Hospital, where their injuries were certified as wounding and harm. Due to the injuries sustained, statements from the officers are yet to be collected.
Police have identified several individuals from the suspect’s family who are now facing investigations for aggravated assault, wounding, obstruction, and property damage. The individuals involved have also been issued medical forms and taken for examination.
The Police Department has reiterated the importance of cooperation during law enforcement actions, urging community members to respect the safety and well-being of officers while performing their duties. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
