By Breaking Belize News Staff: Facing overwhelming DNA evidence against him, Vicente Cerraras, 43, was sentenced to two 16-year sentences for the rape of a 14-year-old girl which took place in 2019.
Cerraras received his sentence on Wednesday in the Belize Magistrate Court after Justice Candice Nanton heard a mitigation plea on his behalf from two character witnesses; his mother and church pastor.
He faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years but was given a 16 year sentence each for two counts of rape against the minor. His two sentences will run concurrently so he will serve on the 16 years minus 15 days he has already spent in prison on remand.
Cerraras was found guilty on July 22, 2024 after DNA evidence matched him to the rape. The minor reported that Cerraras raped her on two separate occasions on June 27, 2019 and again on August 26, 2019. Cerraras was represented by attorney Ronnel Gonzalez.
