Verdes win Western Championship preseason quadrangular with 2-1 victory over Benque Viejo United

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC captured the one-day Western Championship, a preseason quadrangular organized by National Sports Council (NSC) Deputy Director Marvin Ottley, defeating Benque Viejo United 2-1 in the final at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday.

Trimayne Harris opened the scoring in the 8^th minute but Benque Viejo United’s Nahjib Guerra nailed the equalizer in injury time in the 35’+1. (The matches were 70 minutes long with 35-minute halves.) Darrel Myvett put the game away in 53^rd.

The Cayo West Selection, comprising Benque Area First Division players, earned third place in a 5-4 penalty-shootout over Police Benque (Club Deportivo Benque) after a 1-1 draw in regulation. Kenyord Bood scored for Police Benque in the 16^th minute but Ferdi Heredia tied the match for the Cayo West Selection in the 37^th.

In the tie-breaking penalty shootout, Gilbert Menjivar, Isaias Hernandez, Ferdi Heredia, Henry Betancourt, and Carlos Martinez scored for the Cayo West Selection to give them the win.

The tournament kicked off at 4:15 pm with Verdes FC qualifying for the final on a 2-0 victory over Police Benque. The Green Machine’s goals were scored by Felix Martinez, recently acquired from Wagiya, in the 48^th minute and Krisean Lopez in the 50^th minute.

In the second game, Benque Viejo United defeated the Cayo West Selection 3-0 to move on to the final. Moises Hernandez scored in the 27^th minute, Owen Sosa in the 43^rd, and Desmond Wade in the 52^nd.

The organizers said Cayo West Selection and Police Benque weren’t satisfied with the original schedule that had the Cayo West Selection facing Verdes and Club Deportivo Benque tackling Benque Viejo United. The organizers acquiesced and changed the format but that didn’t help them as both lost in the first round.

The top three teams in the Western Championship won monetary prizes given by the National Sports Council. Verdes won $3000, Benque Viejo United $2000, and the Cayo West Selection $1000.

The NSC’s Kursha Pollard said approximately 500 fans attended the Western Championship.
