By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC face a steep uphill battle after falling behind 2-0 to Honduran powerhouse Motagua at halftime in their opening Concacaf Central American Cup match at FFB Stadium in Belmopan on Tuesday, Juky 29.
Motagua struck early through Carlos Mejía in the 16th minute, curling a free kick toward the near post. Verdes’ goalkeeper Woodrow West misjudged the flight, unable to clear the danger as the ball nestled into the net. Verdes responded with intent moments later when Omar Rosas connected with a grounded header off a corner kick in the 18th, but the effort was deflected and failed to trouble the visitors.
Rosas had another opportunity in the 19th minute, but his shot lacked power and precision. Motagua doubled the lead just two minutes later, as Jorge Serrano sliced through three defenders from the left corner and blasted a shot past West to make it 2-0.
Since conceding the second goal, Verdes struggled to mount a consistent attack, spending much of the remainder of the half in defensive posture.
Toward the end of the half, Rosas and captain Jordy Polanco sparked brief hope, combining to generate a pair of chances inside the box, but Motagua’s back line held firm.
Verdes will need to regroup and adjust in the second half to avoid a repeat of their 5-0 defeat to Motagua in the 2023 edition of the tournament.
