By Aaron Humes: Following a pair of tightly contested second legs in the semifinals of the Premier League of Belize Closing Season semifinals, Verdes of San Ignacio and Port Layola of Belize City emerged as the finalists this past weekend.
The City boys were defending a 2-0 lead from the first leg last week at the Marion Jones Stadium and went into hostile ground at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence Village.
They lost 2-1 but won the series 3-2 on aggregate to advance.
The Green Machine obtained a precious 1-0 lead on the road in Benque Viejo last week against the hometown Benque United. Simply preventing their western neighbors from scoring in the return at the Norman Broaster Stadium on Sunday would do the trick, and a 0-0 draw eliminated the Benquenos.
Verdes remains on track for an appearance in the Central American Club Championship, for which they would need to win this final series. With Altitude eliminated, Verdes has the inside track with the most points over the 2023-2024 season, but a Closing Season Finals title makes sure.
The final series begins this weekend.
