By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes FC fell 4-1 to Honduran powerhouse Motagua at FFB Stadium in Belmopan in a pulsating Concacaf Central American Cup clash on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Though Verdes showed flashes of brilliance, defensive errors and missed chances allowed the visitors to maintain control.
Carlos Mejía opened the scoring in the 16th minute with a curling free kick that slipped past Woodrow West at the near post. Jorge Serrano doubled the lead in the 21st after weaving through defenders and striking centrally beyond West. The hosts trailed 2-0 at halftime, struggling to find a foothold.
Motagua extended the lead in the 55th when captain Marcelo Santos capitalized on a failed clearance. After a few rapid passes, Santos blasted an unchallenged shot into the bottom right corner for 3-0.
Verdes nearly pulled one back in the 72nd when Jordy Polanco’s header from a corner kick crashed off the far post. Moments later, in the 76th minute, Motagua earned a penalty when Jefryn Macías fell in the box under a challenge from West. The Verdes keeper redeemed himself in the 78th minute by stopping Mathías Vásquez’s shot.
Brian Lozano’s rebound struck the right post in the 80th as Verdes pressed for a response.
The home side finally broke through in the 83rd when Krisean Lopez nodded home a gritty header off Rosas’ determined cross from the left flank.
But Motagua responded instantly. In the 84th, substitute Edwin Munguía — just inserted — capitalized after Verdes failed to clear, finding himself unmarked on the right side of the goal area and converting to seal the 4-1 win.
Verdes will aim to regroup ahead of the return leg, hoping to overcome a steep deficit and rewrite their fortunes on the continental stage.
