Four decades of regional grit and historic milestones

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Established in 1976 as Real Verdes Football Club, Verdes FC has long stood as Belize’s most enduring and decorated football institution. From early forays into the Concacaf Champions’ Cup to recent breakthroughs in the Concacaf League and Central American Cup, the Green Machine has consistently carried Belize’s flag across the region.
Early Continental Appearances
- 1985: First Belizean club to compete in the Concacaf Champions’ Cup against Bermuda’s Pembroke Hamilton.
- Featured in eight editions of the Champions’ Cup and two editions of the Concacaf Champions League, facing elite clubs such as Cruz Azul, UNAM, Municipal, and Real España.
UNCAF & Champions League Era
- 1990s–2000s: Most appearances by any Belizean club in the UNCAF Club Tournament, including ties against Comunicaciones, Luis Ángel Firpo, and Xelajú MC.
- 2008–09: Faced Cruz Azul in the Champions League preliminary round, falling 0–6 in both legs.
- 2015: Achieved a standout group-stage performance — 4 points, including a 0–0 draw vs Querétaro (Mexico) and a 2–1 win over San Francisco FC (Panama).

Recent Breakthroughs
- 2020–2022: Competed in three consecutive Concacaf League tournaments.
- 2020: Preliminary round vs Arcahaie FC cancelled due to COVID-19 quarantine in Panama.
- 2022: Made history by becoming the first Belizean club to win a competitive series, advancing to the Round of 16 after a 2–2 draw vs Platense of El Salvador and progression on away goals.
Central American Cup Era
- 2023: Participated in the inaugural Concacaf Central American Cup, grouped with Motagua, Alajuelense, Sporting San Miguelito, and Olancho — finishing fifth in Group D.
- 2025: Returned for a second appearance, now in Group C alongside Motagua, Saprissa, Cartaginés, and Independiente, aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time.
Verdes FC’s continental journey reflects their resilience, ambition and national pride. As the club prepares for its latest campaign, it carries not only the hopes of Cayo but the aspirations of Belizean football on the international stage.
