By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, earning global recognition for her tireless struggle to restore democracy in Venezuela, a victory that comes as Donald Trump’s long-speculated Nobel bid failed once again.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado as “a woman who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness,” highlighting her courage in remaining in Venezuela despite threats, persecution, and political repression under President Nicolás Maduro’s regime.
Machado, 58, has lived in hiding since January after the Venezuelan government issued warrants for her and several of her allies. Once a presidential candidate, she was disqualified from running in the country’s 2024 elections, which were widely condemned as fraudulent. Despite facing arrest and intimidation, she continues to inspire millions of Venezuelans with her message of non-violent resistance.
“I am in shock. I cannot believe it,” Machado said in a phone call with the Norwegian Nobel Institute, expressing gratitude and humility. “This is something the Venezuelan people deserve. I’m just part of a huge movement.”
Her ally Edmundo González, now in exile in Spain, called the award “a well-deserved recognition of her courage and that of the Venezuelan people.”
The Nobel Committee emphasized that Machado’s steadfastness stands in stark contrast to the authoritarian clampdown in Venezuela, where more than 800 political prisoners are detained, according to the human rights group Foro Penal.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump, who had openly hinted at his own chances of winning the Peace Prize, did not make the final list of laureates. Reports of Trump’s nomination gained traction after his proposed ceasefire plan in Gaza received international attention earlier this week.
Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes dismissed questions about political influence, saying the Nobel decision was made “solely on courage, integrity, and the will of Alfred Nobel.”
The White House quickly responded, with Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung claiming the Nobel Committee “places politics over peace.”
Machado becomes the 20th woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, joining a prestigious list of global changemakers. She was previously included in Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, where U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described her as “the Venezuelan Iron Lady, the personification of resilience and patriotism.”
Her win symbolizes not only personal bravery but also renewed hope for a Venezuela longing for freedom and international recognition of its democratic struggle.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel award presented in Oslo, Norway, while other categories, medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and economics are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden.
