UWI law student and Police officer appeals for urgent support for Belizean students as Melissa heads for Jamaica

By Aaron Humes: A University of the West Indies law student has made a plea on social media for assistance as Jamaica braces for an impending natural disaster.

Darwin McFadzean, a second-year law student at UWI Mona and an active-duty police officer, has taken to social media to raise alarm over the dire situation affecting over 40 Belizean students on the island who have been left to fend for themselves.

McFadzean expressed a growing sense of isolation and vulnerability among the student group, highlighting the severe financial strain of living in Jamaica. “Many of us survive on a hand-to-mouth basis because Jamaica is no joke, Jamaica is EXPENSIVE!!!!” he emphasized.

With limited resources and no immediate institutional relief, McFadzean is calling on the public for financial assistance. “Anyways people. Some of us out here need help. Financial help,” he said. “If you are willing to help, let me know ASAP so I can direct you to the relevant people.”

This appeal comes as other countries, such as Antigua, the Bahamas, and Trinidad and Tobago, have taken steps to evacuate their students to safer locations, with some even accommodating them in hotels.

As of 3 p.m. per the National Hurricane Center, the center of Hurricane Melissa was located near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 75.5 West, 210 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. Melissa is moving slowly toward the west near 3 mph (6 km/h). A slow westward motion is expected tonight through the end of the weekend. A turn to the north and northeast is forecast on Monday and Tuesday. On the forecast track, the center of Melissa is expected to move near or over Jamaica during the weekend and early next week, and it could be near or over eastern Cuba by the middle of next week.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid intensification is forecast to continue over the next day or so and Melissa is forecast to become a major hurricane tomorrow and is expected to still be a major hurricane
when making landfall in Jamaica early next week.
