By Zoila Palma:  The U.S. State Department will undergo a major restructuring, reducing staff and eliminating several human rights-focused offices, according to a plan announced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Rubio called the department “bloated” and ideologically misaligned with current U.S. priorities, citing competition with China as a key concern, AFP reports.

The overhaul includes replacing the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor with a new office overseeing foreign aid and humanitarian affairs.

The changes also dissolve the offices on climate, war crimes, and conflict prevention.

Critics, including lawmakers and advocacy groups, argue the move undermines U.S. soft power and global human rights leadership.

The State Department says the changes aim to improve efficiency without necessarily ending key functions.
