US pressure mounts on Belize over Cuban medical program

16

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The future of the Cuban medical brigade in Belize remains uncertain as the government has yet to decide whether the team will continue its service in the country.

According to reports, the brigade currently consists of 94 personnel, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrators, who are actively supporting Belize’s healthcare system.

Health officials have indicated that removing the brigade could place significant strain on public healthcare, particularly in rural areas where access to medical services is already limited.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health has been making a conscious effort over the past five years to build local capacity. This includes training more nurses, expanding scholarship opportunities, and launching programs in partnership with the University of Belize to educate and prepare more Belizean medical doctors. These initiatives are part of a broader push to ensure that hospitals across the country are increasingly staffed by Belizean professionals.

The situation comes amid increasing pressure from the United States, which has urged countries in the region to reconsider participation in Cuba’s medical cooperation program.

Belize now faces a critical decision that could impact both its healthcare system and its international relations.
