“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Trump wrote. “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country.”
The historic election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, has drawn widespread attention, particularly in the United States, where his appointment is seen as a moment of national pride.
A Historic Papal Election
Prevost, originally from Chicago, Illinois, was elected as the 267th Bishop of Rome, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Catholic Church. His election was announced by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, who proclaimed the traditional words: “Habemus Papam”—”We have a Pope.”
Leo XIV is also the first Augustinian pope and the second pope from the Americas, following Pope Francis. His extensive experience in Latin America, particularly in Peru, has shaped his pastoral approach and leadership style.
Trump’s Anticipation for a Meeting
In his Truth Social post, President Trump expressed his eagerness to meet the new pope, stating, “I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
While no official meeting has been scheduled, past US presidents have traditionally met with the pope during visits to the Vatican or international summits. Trump previously met Pope Francis during his presidency in 2017.
