The initiative, “Espacios de memoria en Puerto Rico: prácticas y experiencias de historia pública” [Spaces of Memory in Puerto Rico: Practices and Experiences of Public History] led by professors Marcelo Luzzi and Windy Cosme, will develop collaborative practices around spaces of memory and state violence in the archipelago. Here are excerpts.

The School of Humanities at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (RRP-UPR) will develop the project entitled “Espacios de memoria en Puerto Rico: prácticas y experiencias de historia pública” (EMPR) [Spaces of Memory in Puerto Rico: Practices and Experiences of Public History] over the next three years, following the approval of $1,900,000.00 in funding from the Mellon Foundation.

The project will be led by Dr. Marcelo Luzzi, a professor in the Department of History, who will serve as the principal investigator. Dr. Windy Cosme Rosario, a professor in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program (PREI) and the Master’s Program in Cultural Management and Administration (MAGAC), will serve as the lead researcher.

Espacios de memoria en Puerto Rico (EMPR) aims to identify, document, interpret, and activate spaces linked to state political violence in the Puerto Rican archipelago through collaborative public history practices developed in dialogue with communities.

The initiative will integrate interdisciplinary research, student training, and collaboration with communities to reclaim historically silenced territories as spaces of memory, historical justice, and symbolic reparation. Throughout its implementation, the project will directly impact 36 undergraduate and 12 graduate students, who will participate in interdisciplinary research and community work teams, supported by academic mentors and community leaders.

In addition, EMPR will develop a public digital platform that will include an interactive map of memory sites, document repositories, and open-access educational materials, expanding public access to the knowledge produced in collaboration with the communities. [. . .]
