By Aaron Humes: As the current cold front sweeps across Belize heading east, this morning, Monday, residents in the northern regions of Belize experienced notably cool temperatures, with Yo Chen, Corozal District recording a brisk 44.7 degrees Fahrenheit and Orange Walk-La Milpa registering 43.9 degrees Fahrenheit.
This chill will persist for most of this week. Chief Meteorologist Ronald Gordon cited a forecast map with lows expected to dip into the lower 60s along the coast, the low to mid 50s inland, and even into the upper 40s in the mountainous areas.
While these temperatures are certainly a departure from the norm for Belize, the National Meteorological Service’s meteorological data indicates that they do not reach historical lows for the region. Minimum temperatures across Belize on Sunday revealed a distinct coastal-to-inland gradient, with the coolest conditions concentrated in the western inland areas, particularly in the Cayo District, and slightly warmer temperatures lingering along the coastal regions and offshore cayes.
On Sunday, Baldy Beacon in the Cayo District recorded a minimum temperature of 9.7 degrees Celsius or 49.5 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning, marking it as the lowest daily minimum temperature recorded for February 1. However, this figure is not the coldest on record for the month of February; that distinction belongs to a chilling 7.2 degrees Celsius or 45 degrees Fahrenheit encountered on February 13, 2006.
Residents are reminded to dress warmly as the cold snap continues, and to stay informed about changing weather conditions. The National Meteorological Service encourages everyone to download the “Belize Weather” mobile app, available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, for real-time updates and access to current weather watches and warnings throughout the country.
