Unofficial marijuana holiday 4/20 means lots of lighting up the ‘dutchie’ in Belize

By Horace Palacio: While the global significance of April 20th for marijuana lovers is no secret, the day is beginning to hold a special place in the ‘ital culture’ in Belize. The unofficial “high holiday” is marked by both laid-back smoking celebrations by marijuana lovers and some discussions about the use of the herb.

Since November 2017, possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis in private has been decriminalized in Belize. This change has led to a more relaxed atmosphere and reduced penalties for minor possession. However, the growing of cannabis and trading of its products remain illegal.

“4/20 is a day to kick back, but also to think about how far we’ve come and where we need to go,” commented Ras Monte, a local cannabis advocate. “Decriminalization was a big step, but true legalization would open doors for small farmers and entrepreneurs.”

While public attitudes towards cannabis are shifting, there remains a debate over full legalization. Proponents see economic opportunity and individual freedom, while opponents cite concerns about youth usage and potential social impacts.

The government has signaled a willingness to explore further changes but has not outlined a concrete timeline or plan.

Despite the ongoing discussions, 4/20 is likely to feature low-key celebrations for many Belizeans and lots of social media ‘happy weed day’ or happy 4/20′ posts.
