By Breaking Belize News Staff: The University of Belize is asking for more government support—and this time, the bill is bigger. UB is requesting a $2.4 million bump in its annual subsidy, seeking to raise the total from $7.6 million to $10 million for the current fiscal year. The proposal is one of several mounting financial demands facing the Briceño administration, and according to Minister of State for Finance Christopher Coye, it may not be feasible.

Minister Coye acknowledged the request but urged UB to focus more on income generation and long-term sustainability. He pointed out that while UB has tremendous assets and academic potential, including properties like Calabash Caye and programs such as the now-defunct Spanish-English Language Institute, those assets remain underutilized.

Coye emphasized that many international universities use strategic investments and global partnerships to strengthen their financial base. He suggested UB consider leveraging exchange programs and charging foreign students fees to make the institution more self-sustaining, rather than relying solely on government funds.

The call for increased funding comes amid rising costs and growing student needs at the national university. UB’s initial pitch for a larger subsidy was made in mid-2024 following internal evaluations, but with tight fiscal conditions, it remains unclear whether the government can meet the request without cutting elsewhere.

The Ministry of Finance has yet to confirm if the increase will be approved in the upcoming budget adjustments.
