By Zoila Palma: The U.S. State Department Bureau of Western Hemisphere expressed gratitude to the Government of Belize for signing a Safe Third Country Agreement.
“An important milestone in ending illegal immigration, shutting down abuse of our nation’s asylum system, and reinforcing our shared commitment to tackling challenges in our hemisphere together,” the statement said.
“Grounded in the commitment of states to cooperate under the 1951 UN Convention on the Status of Refugees, the Agreement reinforces Belize’s commitment to international law and humanitarian principles while ensuring strong national safeguards. Belize retains an absolute veto over transfers, with restrictions on nationalities, a cap on transferees, and comprehensive security screenings. No person who is deemed to be a threat to the public safety or national security will be allowed to enter or stay in Belize,” the Government of Belize noted.
Additionally, the United States may also provide, upon request, financial and technical assistance to enhance Belize’s migration and asylum management system.
The Agreement will take effect only after ratification by the Senate and the establishment of operating procedures, ensuring full compliance with Belize’s constitutional and international obligations. It will initially remain in effect for two years and may be terminated by either party.
