By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, the United Nations highlight the urgent need to end impunity for crimes against journalists, a critical issue for ensuring freedom of expression and access to information. The 2024 observance focuses on the safety of journalists working in crisis and conflict zones, where many face severe threats, including death, torture, and kidnapping.
Despite a decline in journalist killings since 2017, recent trends show a rise in violence, with over 50% of killings occurring in conflict areas in 2023. Journalists often work in dangerous conditions, risking their lives to provide independent and reliable news.
The theme centers on the safety of journalists in crises and emergencies.
Latin America remains the most dangerous region for journalists, with over 1,700 killed since 1993, and in nine out of ten cases, the perpetrators go unpunished. Impunity fosters a climate of fear, hindering the free flow of information. Women journalists are particularly vulnerable to online harassment, with 73% reporting threats related to their work.
Strengthening justice systems to investigate attacks on journalists is crucial for promoting accountability and protecting freedom of expression.
