By Zoila Palma: The United Nations General Assembly has officially declared May 25 as World Football Day, recognizing the sport’s powerful role in promoting peace, unity, and development worldwide.
The date marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament featuring teams from all global regions, held during the 1924 Paris Olympic Games.
Football, widely regarded as the world’s most popular sport, transcends borders, languages, and social divides. It serves not only as entertainment but also as a unifying force that fosters national pride, community spirit, and mutual understanding across cultures. Its global appeal makes it a key contributor to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in health, education, and gender equality.
The UN resolution, passed on May 7, 2024, highlights football’s influence in areas such as diplomacy, commerce, and social inclusion. It recognizes the important role played by FIFA, regional federations, and grassroots organizations in advancing the sport and using it as a platform for positive change.
Countries and organizations are encouraged to observe World Football Day through educational campaigns, awareness activities, and policies that promote sport for development and peace.
The resolution underscores the unique ability of football—and sport more broadly—to bring people together and contribute to the well-being of individuals and communities across the globe.
