United Nations Belize and Government of Belize Convene 7th Joint National Steering Committee Meeting to Advance Development Priorities for 2026 and Beyond

The Government of Belize and the United Nations Country Team convened the Joint National Steering Committee Meeting, co-chaired by H.E. Amalia Mai, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Mr. Raul Salazar, United Nations Resident Coordinator for Belize and El Salvador.

The Joint National Steering Committee serves as the primary platform for strategic dialogue and coordination between the Government of Belize and the United Nations to advance the implementation of the United Nations Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF) 2022–2026, while also informing the next cycle of cooperation for 2027–2031.

The meeting brought together Chief Executive Officers, senior Government officials, Heads of United Nations Agencies, Funds, and Programmes to review progress, exchange perspectives, and align priorities for 2026 and beyond.

During the session, the United Nations presented key highlights from the 2025 United Nations Country Results Report, outlining collective progress achieved under the current Country Implementation Plan. The discussion also provided an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned and areas requiring further attention as the current cycle approaches completion.

The Government of Belize presented its national priorities under Plan Belize 2.0 – the Medium-Term Development Strategy (2026–2030), setting the direction for development planning over the coming years. This was complemented by the presentation of the United Nations Country Implementation Plan 2026 and updates on the development of the MSDCF 2027–2031.

The dialogue focused on strengthening alignment between national priorities and United Nations support, enhancing coordination mechanisms, and identifying practical approaches to accelerate results in key development areas.

In this regard, H.E. Amalia Mai reiterated that “our partnership with the UN remains so important, as it provides not only technical support, but also a platform for coordinated action, policy dialogue and resource mobilization.”

Mr. Raul Salazar, United Nations Resident Coordinator for Belize and El Salvador, emphasized the importance of continued partnership, noting that “the support of the United Nations must continue to translate into tangible and measurable results aligned with Belize’s national development priorities.”

The meeting concluded with a shared understanding of the importance of maintaining strong collaboration, ensuring clarity of priorities, and continuing to advance joint efforts toward sustainable development outcomes for Belize.

The Government of Belize and the United Nations in Belize reaffirm their commitment to working in partnership to support the achievement of national development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals.
