By Zoila Palma: The United Nations in Belize and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) have signed a Declaration of Intent aimed at strengthening collaboration with the private sector to support Belize’s development priorities.
The agreement was signed on Thursday, October 22, following the signing of the Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (MSDCF) 2027–2031 earlier that day. The partnership seeks to encourage greater private sector involvement in advancing sustainable development initiatives across the country.
The Declaration outlines areas for cooperation, including dialogue and knowledge-sharing with the business community, identifying opportunities for joint initiatives, and promoting responsible, inclusive, and sustainable business practices. It is intended to strengthen engagement between the United Nations and businesses in support of Belize’s development goals under the new cooperation framework.
During the event, Kyana Bowen, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Caribbean, highlighted the role businesses can play in promoting sustainable development. She discussed how the UN Global Compact encourages companies to align their strategies and operations with principles covering human rights, labour, environmental protection, and anti-corruption. The initiative also supports businesses in contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Through the Declaration, the United Nations in Belize and BCCI aim to encourage businesses to adopt responsible practices and explore opportunities to contribute to national development.
