By Aaron Humes: If elected in the majority on Wednesday, the next United Democratic Party (UDP) government has proposed an ambitious economic development plan for Belize that prioritizes education, vocational training, and foreign investment.
The plan highlighted in the ‘U Deserve Better’ manifesto focuses on the critical role of education and skills training in fostering a skilled workforce that can innovate and drive economic success. “A well-educated populace is essential for creating a dynamic and robust economy,” the UDP states. “Our strategy aims to prepare Belizeans for the demands of various industries, thereby creating a vibrant labor market that can compete on a global scale.”
Key elements of the proposal include a reduction in the minimum requirements for accessing financing from the Development Finance Corporation (DFC), aimed at empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as well as students seeking higher education opportunities, both domestically and internationally.
Among the primary objectives outlined in the plan are:
Investment in Education: The UDP plans to invest heavily in educational programs that equip the Belizean workforce with relevant technical skills, particularly in sectors like technology, agriculture, healthcare, engineering, and construction.
Subsidization of Tertiary Education: The next UDP government intends to subsidize costs at tertiary institutions, making it more affordable for students to acquire the skills necessary for a modern economy.
Job Creation through Foreign Investment: With a focus on increasing foreign direct investment, the UDP aims to bolster job creation in sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture, as part of a strategy to combat unemployment rates in the country.
Development of Entrepreneurs: The plan emphasizes the importance of entrepreneurship, aiming to enhance support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through tax incentives and easier access to business development resources.
Business Incubators and Innovation Hubs: To promote new industry growth, the government will establish business incubators and innovation hubs designed to support startups and emerging businesses.
Improvement of Trade Access: Measures will be taken to improve market access for local products, including new trade agreements and initiatives to promote exports.
“The next UDP government will work tirelessly to position Belize as a regional business hub for multinational corporations,” the party says, highlighting the need for a favorable business environment to attract investments. It adds that this strategic approach not only targets economic revitalization but also aims to create lasting opportunities for Belizeans, ensuring that future generations have the skills and resources needed to thrive in an ever-evolving global economy.
