By Aaron Humes: The Public Service Union (PSU) of Belize has reported that a strong majority of its members have voted in favor of the government’s recent salary adjustment and increment proposal. The vote, which reflects a significant turnout of union members, resulted in 75.68 percent acceptance of the proposal, while 25.05 percent expressed their opposition.
This democratic endorsement indicates a clear mandate for the union leadership to proceed with the agreement. The Government has confirmed its commitment to implementing the proposed salary adjustments starting in October.
Reports suggest that the Association of Public Service Senior Managers has also accepted the Government’s proposal, while a majority of members of the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) are leaning toward the same although voting is ongoing.
The proposal is for a 4.5 percent increase starting in October, the unfreezing of one increment next April, another four percent increase next October, and another increment unfreezing the following April.
The joint union leadership is expected to engage with Government officials to ensure a smooth rollout of the new salary structure in the coming weeks.
