By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Joint Union Negotiating Team (JUNT) has unanimously rejected both salary proposals put forward by the Government of Belize and warned that industrial action may be imminent unless a better offer is made.

The first offer included a 3% salary adjustment in the next fiscal year, followed by gradual unfreezing of increments over three years. The second proposal presented a 4% salary increase this year, but union leaders say it came with problematic conditions, especially its link to pension reform and the contributory pension scheme.

Sharon Frazer, President of the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM), said the new offer is “worse than the original.”
“They’re saying new to get these, we have to agree to pension reform, and the pension reform would have started in October this year as well. So it’s obviously a worse offer,” Frazer stated.

Dean Flowers, President of the Public Service Union (PSU), emphasized that the union is no longer interested in dialogue without a serious counteroffer.
“I declared my trade dispute… Membership agreed for us to declare that dispute and said they would yield to the call for industrial action unless government returns to the table,” he told the media.

Nadia Caliz, President of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU), echoed the sentiment.
“We’re not in agreement at all. We have already issued our notice so we know that that is still in effect,” she stated.

The unions have not yet declared the date for industrial action but made it clear that they are mobilized and waiting.
