By Zoila Palma: Belize is facing a troubling increase in substance misuse and abuse among adolescents, women, and children, presenting significant risks to their health and development.
Of particular concern are the impacts on adolescents, pregnant women, and young people, who are especially vulnerable.
On February 11, UNICEF, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC), and Yale University, hosted a key stakeholders’ meeting to address these pressing issues.
During the session, NDACC shared its findings on substance abuse trends among adolescents, youth, and women in Belize.
The meeting provided an in-depth discussion on substance use, misuse, and abuse, with a focus on identifying effective prevention, treatment, and integration strategies.
This meeting is part of a broader initiative, the ongoing “Situational Analysis on Substance Abuse Among Adolescents, Youth, and Women,” which aims to better understand the scope of substance abuse across the country.
As substance abuse continues to affect young people’s development, increased accessibility to harmful substances has made it even more critical to implement collective efforts.
These efforts will ensure that women, children, and adolescents receive the necessary resources for prevention, treatment, and support to address this growing public health concern.
