The eighteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICHC) took place at the Cresta Mowana Resort in Kasane, Republic of Botswana, from December 4 to 9, 2023. The UNESCO ICHC recently published the new additions to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
The new Caribbean or Caribbean-related additions include:
- Junkanoo – The Bahamas [See related photo above.]
- Bolero – Cuba, Mexico
- Traditional wooden boatbuilding – Grenada
- Midwifery – Colombia (among others)
- Safeguarding practices program for the cultural/ecologic Sea Turtle Festival of Armila – Panama
- Bandos and Parrandas of the Holy Innocents – Venezuela
- Rotterdam Summer Carnival – The Netherlands
