By Aaron Humes: Preliminary results of the biannual Labour Force Survey released by the Statistical Institute of Belize reveal a promising decline in the country’s unemployment rate, which dropped to 2.1 percent in April 2025 from 3 percent in April 2024, and remained steady from September’s figure of 2.1 percent. This significant change is attributed to an increase of 13,697 employed individuals alongside a decrease of 1,182 unemployed persons.
As of April 2025, the estimated number of unemployed individuals stands at 3,864. The gender breakdown highlights some disparity, with the unemployment rate for females at 3.3 percent, nearly double that of males, who report a rate of just 1.3 percent. Youth unemployment, particularly among those aged 14 to 24, is at 4.4 percent.
The survey further revealed that two in every five of the unemployed population, approximately 41.6 percent, have been without work for twelve months or more. Conversely, about one-third have faced unemployment for under three months. Support systems for these individuals vary, with most (71.5 percent) relying on financial assistance from family members, such as parents or spouses. Additionally, around 16 percent have been managing through savings or pensions.
Geographically, the district of Toledo struggles with the highest unemployment rate at 4.1 percent, while Belize City and Cayo report the lowest figures at 1.4 percent.
Education plays a crucial role in employment opportunities, with individuals possessing only a primary education facing an unemployment rate of 2.8 percent. Those with secondary and tertiary education experience lower rates of 1.8 percent and 2 percent respectively.
