By Rubén Morales Iglesias: St. John’s College (SJC) captured a spot in the Under-18 CODICADER Games Volleyball semifinals with a 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22) win over Nicaragua’s Colegio Esquipula on Saturday evening at the FESAVOL Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador.
SJC finished Group B play with a 2-1 record and qualified in second place, advancing to the semifinals on Sunday. Costa Rica’s Liceo Atenas won the group undefeated with a 3-0 record. Nicaragua finished with a 1-2 record, while Guatemala’s Instituto Nacional de Educación Básica (INEB) Dr. Francisco A. Figueroa ended last with 0-3.
Incidentally, SJC’s Daniel Musa, who was taken to a hospital on Friday suffering from cramps, after a bad fall, during the game against Liceo Atenas, recovered and played on Saturday.
SJC started out by defeating Guatemala’s Instituto Nacional de Educación Básica (INEB) Dr. Francisco A. Figueroa 3-1 (25-12, 18-25, 25-20, 26-24) on Thursday but then fell 3-1 (25-9, 22-25, 25-10, 25-21) to Costa Rica’s Liceo Atenas on Friday.
Panama’s Colegio Agustiniano Chitre beat El Salvador’s Colegio Sagrado Corazón 3-0 on Saturday and clinched the top spot in Group A with a 2-0 record. Honduras’s La Estancia (1-1) finished second, and Colegio Sagrado Corazón (0-2) finished third.
As it stands, in the semifinals on Sunday, SJC will face Panama’s Colegio Agustiniano Chitre at 1:00 pm, while Costa Rica’s Liceo Atenas will play Honduras’ La Estancia at 4:00 pm.
St. Catherine Academy (SCA) also clinched a semifinal berth after finishing in second place in Group B with a 2-1 record in the Girls Tournament, following their 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-13, 25-17) win over Honduras’ International School Tegucigalpa on Saturday. SCA will play Nicaragua’s Colegio Nuestra Señora del Rosario, who on Saturday beat El Salvador’s Colegio Sagrado Corazón 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 10-15), and topped Group A. The SCA semifinal will start at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
Group B winners, Guatemala’s Colegio de Señoritas Sagrado Corazón (3-0), will play their namesake, El Salvador’s Colegio Sagrado Corazón, in the other semifinal on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
