By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old Belizean man is out on bail after being accused of assaulting his niece during a family dispute at home.
Novvin Casemir Leal, 30, appeared unrepresented on Friday morning in Court #3 before a Senior Magistrate, where he was read a single charge of common assault.
The allegation is that Leal assaulted his 21-year-old niece, a call center agent, during an argument over the use of an extension cord.
Leal pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $400 plus one surety of the same amount, which he was able to meet shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
He is due back in court on June 5, 2026.
The incident is alleged to have occurred on Saturday, April 4, 2026, but was not reported to police until Wednesday, April 8.
According to police, Leal’s niece reported that she was at home preparing two packs of ramen noodles when she went into the kitchen and asked to use an extension cord. She told investigators that her uncle refused to let her use it.
She said she then attempted to use an extension cord connected to the refrigerator, at which point Leal allegedly approached her aggressively, grabbed the cord, pushed her on the shoulder, and took it away.
She further alleged that when the cord fell to the ground and she bent down to pick it up, Leal punched her on the left side of her face.
The matter will return to court in June.
