Unable to post bail, Lionel Palacio remanded for allegedly assaulting woman

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-seven-year-old construction worker Lionel Palacio is spending another night behind bars after being unable to post bail following his arraignment on a charge of common assault.

Palacio, who is unrepresented, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 where he was read a single charge of common assault, which he pleaded not guilty to. The allegation is that Palacio, a resident of Ordonez Street, assaulted a woman.

During the proceedings, Palacio attempted to explain his position, but the Senior Magistrate advised him that an explanation was not required after entering a not guilty plea.

There was no objection to bail being offered, and the court granted Palacio bail in the sum of $300 with one surety of the same. As part of his bail conditions, Palacio was ordered not to interfere with the virtual complainant or any member of her family, not to interfere with any prosecution witnesses, and to remain at least 100 feet away from the virtual complainant. The court warned that any breach of these conditions could result in his bail being revoked.

However, by the end of the day, Palacio was unable to post bail, as court records showed he also owed outstanding fines totaling $405. As a result, he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until those fines are addressed.

Palacio is due back in court on February 26, 2026.
