By Zoila Palma: The United Nations is marking World Football Day by highlighting the sport’s transformative power and its role in promoting peace, inclusion and sustainable development worldwide.
Football, recognized as a universal language spoken across cultures and generations, has been credited with fostering community spirit, national pride and cooperation among diverse populations.
World Football Day observed today was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly through Resolution A/RES/78/281 on May 7, 2024. The observance commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament featuring representation from all regions, held during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. The resolution acknowledges football’s global reach and its influence in areas including commerce, diplomacy and peacebuilding.
According to the UN, football’s broad appeal and accessibility make it a powerful tool for promoting health and well-being while also advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls both on and off the field. The organization says the sport serves as a catalyst for social inclusion by creating spaces where people from different backgrounds can build mutual understanding, tolerance, respect and solidarity.
The UN also highlighted the work of the UNHCR’s Gamechanging Team, which brings together 11 players ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a symbolic representation of hope, courage and resilience among displaced people.
